With the rise of Artificial Intelligence  (AI) and Generative AI, the truth is no longer a simple matter of inquiry; instead, it has become a battleground of interpretation, misinformation, and intentional obfuscation. News portals, social media platforms, and various online applications have the technological capability to verify the truthfulness of content with AI tools. However, most platforms have avoided incorporating these features, leaving the quest for truth more elusive than ever. The deliberate evasion of truth verification has resulted in a growing web of confusion, raising critical concerns about accountability in the digital world.


The Potential of AI in Verifying Truth


In theory, the potential for AI to serve as a truth-checking mechanism is profound. Machine learning algorithms can analyze vast datasets, cross-reference information from multiple sources, and flag inconsistencies in real-time. Platforms like Google and Facebook already utilize AI to detect fake news, identify misinformation, and flag harmful content. In India, for example, AI has been used to flag disinformation during elections, where viral posts can have significant political consequences. Similarly, fact-checking organizations, like India’s Alt News, employ AI-based tools to streamline the verification process, scanning millions of online posts and images for false information.


Despite the existence of such tools, many major platforms avoid making AI-driven truth verification a standard feature. This reluctance is not because of technical limitations but due to deeper issues—legal liability, profit motives, and political influences. The question is not whether AI can help verify the truth, but why this technological power remains largely untapped on the platforms that need it most.


Evading the Truth: Profit and Politics


The deliberate avoidance of AI-driven truth verification on social media platforms and news portals can be attributed to two major factors: profit and politics. For companies like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), engagement is key to profit. Content that stirs emotion—whether true or false—tends to generate the highest levels of user interaction. Fake news and sensationalized content often go viral more quickly than fact-based reports, creating a conflict of interest for platforms whose revenue models are built on user engagement.


In the political realm, truth verification through AI also threatens vested interests. In countries like the United States, where political polarization has deepened over the last decade, platforms are reluctant to flag misinformation that may alienate their user base or invite scrutiny from governments. The 2016 U.S. presidential election, for instance, highlighted how platforms like Facebook were used to spread false news and influence voter behavior. While the company introduced limited AI-driven fact-checking measures post-2016, its broader reluctance to adopt a stricter stance against misinformation reflects the fine line between accountability and profit.


In India, during the 2019 general election, Facebook faced criticism for not doing enough to curb the spread of disinformation. Despite employing AI tools to detect problematic content, the platform was accused of selectively targeting certain political messages while letting others slip through. This points to a concerning trend: AI is often deployed selectively rather than universally, creating pockets of accountability while leaving the wider web rife with disinformation.


The Web of Confusion


The result of this avoidance is a growing web of confusion, where the lines between truth and falsehood are blurred. In this environment, the public is left grappling with information overload, unable to discern credible sources from unreliable ones. The spread of misinformation, conspiracy theories, and half-truths has proliferated, with harmful consequences.


One striking example of this is the spread of COVID-19 misinformation. Despite having the technological capacity to combat false health information, platforms like YouTube and Facebook were slow to take decisive action. In Brazil, disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, driven by political narratives, spread widely on WhatsApp and Facebook. While AI tools could have been deployed to quickly debunk these false claims, the platforms’ slow response fueled a public health crisis, with misinformation leading to vaccine hesitancy and a spike in cases.


In contrast, platforms like TikTok have taken a more aggressive approach by employing AI to detect and remove COVID-19-related misinformation. This shows that while the technological capability exists, its implementation varies widely based on the platform’s priorities and external pressures.


The Toughest Challenge: Confronting the Truth


The real challenge is not technological but ethical. Seeking and confronting the truth remains one of the toughest tasks in a world where convenience and profit often trump accountability. When platforms and governments fail to embrace the truth-seeking potential of AI, they contribute to a broader societal issue: the erosion of trust in information.


In Russia, AI tools are used to control and disseminate state-sanctioned narratives, while dissenting information is labeled as fake news or removed altogether. Here, AI is used to suppress truth rather than reveal it, demonstrating the dual-edged nature of this technology. While it can be a powerful tool for verifying facts, it can also be manipulated to enforce a particular version of the truth, blurring the line between truth-seeking and truth-manipulating.


Conclusion: The Path Forward


In an age where AI could serve as a beacon for truth, it is alarming to see how its potential remains underutilized or deliberately avoided. The web of confusion created by the evasion of truth verification is not a product of technical limitations but of profit motives, political agendas, and a reluctance to confront uncomfortable truths. The challenge ahead is clear: we must demand accountability from the platforms we engage with, insist on transparency, and push for the responsible use of AI to verify content.
