This happens when social trust, the very glue that holds democratic societies together, is mortgaged to a small technological elite who are increasingly disconnected from the broader public.

By showing how AI acts as an extractive force—colonizing public discourse, diluting shared values, and weakening the foundations of collective self-governance—this essay aims to sound a moral and democratic alarm. It invites you to pause and reflect: Unless the integration of AI is guided by ethical scrutiny and democratic oversight, we risk trading away truth, liberty, and authentic human connection for the convenience and profit of a few powerful players.

The Problem with AI and Truth

In today’s digital world, we are surrounded by an overwhelming flood of information. Thanks to AI, it has become easier than ever to access content at the click of a button. But paradoxically, it has also become harder to know what’s true and what’s false.

Think about it: when every photo, video, or article online could be artificially generated or manipulated, how do we know what to believe? It’s a situation eerily similar to what George Orwell described in 1984, where “truth” itself became a flexible, shifting idea controlled by those in power.

This constant uncertainty leads us to doubt everything we see or hear. And when doubt becomes a habit, it can result in something scholars call “epistemic paralysis”—a state where we are so overwhelmed by conflicting information that we lose the ability to decide what’s real.

• Anomie: A feeling of disconnection from society’s norms, leading to confusion and purposelessness.

AI’s Role in Society

But AI doesn’t just stop at spreading misinformation. It’s also changing the way we interact with information itself. Instead of encouraging deep thinking, critical reasoning, or healthy skepticism, AI systems are often designed to prioritize content that grabs attention—the most shocking headlines, the most sensational images, the content most likely to go viral.

This shift has serious consequences. Over time, we may start to value what entertains us more than what informs us. And when that happens, our ability to think critically, engage in meaningful discussions, and work together on solving problems gradually erodes.

Drawing Parallels with Brave New World

If Orwell warned us about truth being crushed under force, Aldous Huxley warned us about truth being drowned under distraction. In Brave New World, society wasn’t controlled by fear, but by pleasure and endless entertainment.

Today, unrestrained AI can act as that same “soma”—the drug in Huxley’s novel that kept people numb and content. By constantly feeding us personalized entertainment and viral content, AI risks pacifying us into passive consumers rather than encouraging us to be active seekers of truth.

The Consequences

When we prioritize entertainment over truth, we risk becoming disconnected not only from reality but also from each other. We may lose the social bonds that hold communities together. We may stop asking hard questions. We may grow less willing—or less able—to challenge injustice or falsehoods.

This isn’t just a philosophical concern. Without shared truths, democracy struggles to function. When nobody agrees on basic facts, meaningful debate becomes impossible, trust in institutions collapses, and public action stalls.

What Can We Do?

The good news is that we’re not powerless. There are proactive steps we can take as individuals, communities, and nations to protect truth and democracy in the age of AI:

Implement Stronger Regulations: Governments must require clear labeling of AI-generated content and hold creators of fake news accountable for spreading harm.

Promote AI Literacy: We need to educate people, especially in rural and underserved areas, about how to spot deepfakes, misinformation, and manipulative content. Knowledge is the first defense.

Design Ethical AI: Developers must prioritize truth and public good over shock value and virality when building AI systems. Business models need to align with democratic values.

Ensure Democratic Oversight: Tech companies must not be left to regulate themselves. Democratic institutions should oversee how AI impacts public discourse.

Build Authenticity Infrastructure: We should invest in technologies that can verify the origin and authenticity of content—tools that help us know what’s real.

Hold Platforms Responsible: Social media companies should take active measures to detect, label, and limit the spread of synthetic media and AI-generated misinformation.

Foster Cross-Sector Collaboration: Combating AI-generated misinformation will require cooperation among technologists, educators, policymakers, journalists, and civil society. No single group can solve this alone.

A Call to Action

AI holds tremendous potential to improve lives, foster innovation, and solve big challenges. But if we fail to guide it with ethics, transparency, and democratic accountability, it could just as easily become a tool of manipulation, division, and control.

The responsibility isn’t just with governments or companies—it’s also with each of us. Every time we share an article, click on a link, or forward a video, we play a small role in shaping the information ecosystem we live in.
